From October the 5th to the 12th, we planned to go to Navdanya ; an ecocenter 45mn drive from Dehradun. This is one of the main institution we wanted to see in India. See more here: http://www.navdanya.org/site/
The center is a 55 acres farm (11 acres of mango trees) used to produce, conserve and spread seeds. They also have trained more then ten thousands Bijaks as Bija Vidjapees, literally seeds students but also preserved hundreds of the local state species. For instance this year they planted and will harvest more than 700 rice species, all from Uttarakand.
The farm provides work for at least 30 people including families that handles the farming, the Bijaks facilities, a bovine farm for draft oxes and dairy cows, a herbal garden, etc...
The basic day for us started at
6h30AM - Self-Yoga and Meditation.
7AM. - Chai was available.
8h30 - Breakfast.
8h45 - Team meeting. We met in the gasibo to connect each other's with a mantra, share a quotation and a short game. Then to know what would be the work activity in the fields. And what is planned at 3PM.
9AM - Cleaning Service to take care of the shared areas, kitchen, corridors and bathroom.
10AM - Fields. Harversting ; Planting seeds ; preparing soil,...
1PM - Lunch.
3PM - Afternoon activity.
5PM - Volley-ball or forest walk.
7:30PM - Lunch
The first afternoon we saw a movie called “schooling the world”. The documentary was showing the bad impact of schools creating people that wants to become doctor or ingeneer but failed to adapt to modern life and loose their cultural roots.
If this wasn't a revelation, at least it put me in the shoes of a model that didn't always suited me, and we did sent our children.
After that we talked together to share our fillings and express our ideas what we could do to change our ways.
The 2nd day we prepared a soil removing stones and roots for a future sowing.
40 students (14 to 15 years old) from the Varanasi's Krisnamurti school joined Navdanya for 3 days. We had very good talks and song sharing together.
The 3rd day we harvested soja.
We often played cards after dinner with Gaspard and Genevieve, our 2 canadian/Quebec friends.
At the end of the week we met Vandana Shiva that was the final blessing of the Navdanya trip.
The week was too short. We had amazing moments talking, working, playing, eating and singing together.
Thanks for all.
